Nexium is found quite effective in relieving GERD

Released on = November 16, 2006, 12:25 am

Press Release Author = Olivia Andrews

Industry = Pharmaceuticals

Press Release Summary = Nexium has been found helping in the treatment of Gastro
esophageal diseases largely.

Press Release Body = Heartburn, indigestion, or acid reflux, plagues approximately
44% of Americans at least once a month. Another 14% of adults report using
over-the-counter antacid medications at least twice a week. Fortunately, for such a
common condition, there are a wide variety of highly successful, extremely safe
treatments for acid reflux.

However, acid reflux can often occur without an obvious or specific cause, there are
several risk factors that have been proven to increase the risk of acid reflux.
Smoking is a major cause, since it relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter (the
muscle between the stomach and the esophagus which keeps stomach acid from backing
up). What\'s more, smoking also significantly increases the risk of developing
esophageal cancer.

Studies show that 25 million adults experience heartburn on a daily basis although
it is the most common symptom of GERD that results in sour taste in the mouth or
difficulty in swallowing or backing up of harsh stomach acid into the esophagus.

Nexium already is indicated for the treatment of gastro esophageal reflux disease
(GERD) in adults and children ages 12 to 17, and to reduce the risk of
NSAID-associated gastric ulcers in at-risk patients.

\"These medications are all extremely safe, with very rare side effects,\" said Dr.
Schelles. \"They all can be taken daily, for an unlimited duration.\"

Nexium has been approved for the treatment of heartburn or other symptoms related to
gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) for the healing of erosive esophagitis.
